Reflexology Definition: Reflexology is various forms of manual therapy in which the function of internal organs is affected by massaging specific reflex zones.

Origin: The foundations of reflexology can be traced back to the findings of Sir Henry Head (1861-1940), an English neurologist. In 1893, he discovered that internal organs are closely connected to specific areas of the skin via nerve pathways. These precisely defined areas of skin were later called Head zones or reflex zones. Similarly, the English cardiologist Sir James MacKenzie (1853-1925) postulated areas in the skeletal muscles, called MacKenzie zones, where diseases of the internal organs cause pain. An example of this is the pain in the left arm during a heart attack. Knowledge of the relationship between the reflex zones of the skin or muscles and the internal organs forms the basis for many different therapies such as cold and heat applications or neural therapy. Over time, various forms of massage have emerged that treat the reflex zones in different ways and in different ways. These include muscle reflexology, connective tissue and colon massage. Reflexology is a special development based on the zone therapy of William Fitzgerald.

Basics: Head noticed that diseased organs can cause painful changes in certain areas of the skin. The reason for this is that the respective areas of skin are connected to the corresponding organs via nerve pathways that originate from the same segment of the spinal cord. The head therefore divided the body surface into segments or zones, each of which is associated with a particular spinal cord segment. Each of these segments is closely connected to certain internal organs through the nerve connections. However, these relationships are not limited to the skin, but all tissue layers of the respective segment are affected. When an organ is diseased, reflex changes occur in the skin, connective tissue, muscles, periosteum and lymphatic vessels of the associated segment. Tension, hypersensitivity or pain in a skin zone or certain muscle areas can therefore provide indications of a disease of the respective organ.
